In Christ, we find our true identity – but what does that actually mean? Often, we can’t truly grasp, understand, or we simply forget it because we believe the lies of the enemy.
Our identity in Christ is not something we can earn or acquire; it is given to us by grace and through faith. This identity is shaped by His love, His acceptance, and His sacrifice – not by our performance.
In this blog post, I want to encourage you and remind you of who you are in Jesus.
The following statements are written in the first person and supported by Bible verses.
I am a beloved child of God.
God has adopted me, I am born of Him, and I will be glorified with Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ, I am a member of God’s family.
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13
God not only created us but also adopted us as His children. He loves us so much that we are called “children of God” (1 John 3:1).
I am accepted, not rejected.
There are times when we feel lonely or abandoned. Yet Psalm 27:10 reminds us:
“For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.”
Through God’s acceptance, we find our true belonging in Him. Therefore, we don’t need to fear rejection because He has welcomed us into His family. You are His daughter, and He offers you peace and security. He is our refuge and our comforter.
I am loved by God, even in my sin and imperfection.
Romans 5:8 says: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
This love does not depend on our perfection or good works. Rather, it is unconditional and shown through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. He loves us even when we make mistakes.
I am saved by grace and faith.
Our salvation is a gift – not something we could earn through our own efforts.
Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
This is God’s undeserved grace that saves us in Christ and enables us to live in the good works He has prepared for us.
All accusations against me have been erased.
In Christ, we are forgiven of all debts. As Colossians 2:13-15 assures us, God “forgave us all our sins” and nailed “the record of debt that stood against us” to the cross. He disarmed the powers that stood against us and gave us victory. This means that no accusation or power can separate us from God’s love and forgiveness anymore.
“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” Colossians 2:13-15
I am justified by faith in Christ.
It is not our own righteousness but faith in Jesus Christ that lets us stand righteous before God.
Romans 4:5 says: “And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.”
Through faith in Jesus, we are justified and can live in the freedom and joy of this truth.
I am a new creation.
In Christ, the old has passed away, and everything has become new.
As 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 teaches us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
God has reconciled us to Himself and no longer counts our sins against us. We are free to live as new people, free from the past’s burdens and empowered by hope.
I am freely forgiven.
This forgiveness is complete and free. There’s nothing we could do to earn God’s forgiveness – it is a gift that we receive through Jesus.
1 John 1:9 assures us: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I am lovingly and wonderfully wanted and created by God.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16
These verses reveal how God created us intentionally and with love, even before we were born. Our worth is so deeply rooted in God’s eyes. He created us in His image.
I am free from guilt and shame.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
Through Jesus, there is no longer condemnation and guilt. Our sin cannot be used against us. The enemy accuses, but the Holy Spirit convicts in love. Therefore, we may live in a new identity, free from past burdens.
I am chosen by God.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
We are chosen, called, valuable, and created for the glory of God.
Nothing can separate me from God’s love.
Romans 8:38-39 says: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This powerful verse tells us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. You are His.
